Sony has unveiled an upgraded PS4, the PlayStation 4 Pro. The PS4 Pro runs a GPU that’s twice as powerful as it’s predecessor, the PS4, a CPU featuring a boosted clock speed and a larger 1TB hard drive. During an event in New York City, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Andrew House, described the PS4 Pro as an evolution of the console that will sit alongside the standard PS4 rather than serve as a new console generation.

With PlayStation 4 we’re pretty much maxing out what 1080p TVs can do with games.

Sony showed preview footage from Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Spider-Man, For Honor and Watch Dogs 2 in 4K HDR. Sony says the footage was rendered using PS4 Pro hardware. Although PS4 Pro is expected to emphasize 4K and HDR (high dynamic range) technologies seen on new high-end televisions, one is forced to ask if PS4 Pro will render games natively in 4K for compatible televisions, or if it will render at a lower resolution and then upconvert the video to 4K after rendering it.

Clearly, those with 4K TVs with HDR will see the biggest advantages with PS4 Pro. Sony intends to improve graphical clarity for 1080p HDTVs and also, alongside game developers develop patches for a number of currently available PS4 games to use the PS4 Pro’s power to improve graphical quality in 1080p, Sony calls this feature “forward compatibility.” As for PS4 owners, all PS4 consoles will receive HDR support with a firmware upgrade next week, but 4K support wont be included.

PS4 games will still work on PS4 Pro, Sony is encouraging third-party developers to take advantage of the PS4 Pro’s increased power when it’s available with hardware-specific support. Game companies such as Electronic Arts (EA) announced that Battlefield One and FIFA 17 will support PS4 Pro hardware. Also Activision announced that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered will take advantage of the PS4 Pro’s improved hardware, additionally, the Call of Duty: Black Ops III, which is already released will get a patch to show graphical and performance improvements on the PS4 Pro.

The PS4 Pro will be available Nov. 10 for $399, while the PS4 slim will be available Sept. 15 for $299. To pre-order the PS4 Pro click here.

To take full advantage of this one will also require a HDR TV

True, and that will cost much more again, but according to Sony even with the regular 1080p or 1080i TV set you can still see reasonable graphic improvements.
